Reviving Heritage and Livelihood: HUMANITE and Zeal Waters Enviro Restore Open Wells in Bangalore
HUMANITE is proud to announce the successful restoration of three open wells at a historic cattle shed in Tasker Town, Shivajinagar, Bangalore. This impactful initiative, made possible through the dedicated efforts of Zeal Waters Enviro, has brought new life to these wells, ensuring a reliable and sustainable water source for the cattle.
This project goes far beyond water restoration; it is a livelihood enhancement initiative aimed at empowering the local community. For the cattle shed owners and their families, the wells are a vital resource for maintaining their livestock, which is central to their economic survival.
A Unique Community with Deep Roots
The cattle shed is home to 30 families, who live in cramped quarters of just 8 x 10 ft above the shed. The space is divided into small partitions, resembling pigeon holes, where families live and work. Despite the challenges, these residents, primarily migrants from Tamil Nadu, have made the shed their home for generations.
Their story traces back to the British era. Historical records indicate that the cattle shed was sanctioned after 1915 when residents of Robertson Road in Fraser Town offered to supply milk to British officers stationed in the cantonment. Originally, the shed served as a stable for housing horses during colonial times. Over the decades, it transformed into a cattle shed as the community shifted to livestock rearing.
The residents belong predominantly to the Konar caste, a sub-division of the Yadav community in Tamil Nadu. Traditionally known as cattle herders and cultivators, the Konars—also called Ayar or Idaiyar—have a long history of livestock management. Many families in the shed trace their roots back to villages like Kuchupatti, Oothupatti, and Koilpatti in Karur district, Tamil Nadu. They have been tending to cattle and selling milk for over three generations, with the fourth generation now continuing this legacy.
Partnership for Sustainability and Community Upliftment
This initiative highlights the power of collaboration in addressing the interconnected challenges of resource scarcity, community welfare, and heritage preservation. HUMANITE’s commitment to sustainable development, alongside Zeal Waters Enviro’s technical expertise, has not only rejuvenated the wells but also positively impacted the well-being and economic stability of the local community.
As the restored wells provide essential support for the cattle and their caretakers, this project stands as a testament to the resilience of the community and the enduring importance of collective action in fostering sustainability and improving lives.
